Rather than C++, you’re taught scripting on Javascript that simplifies the learning process to apply functions and ordered conceptual. Although the content is not completely overwhelming, the conceptual application definitely is. If you got into UBC, then you were great at something that society values.

And I’m stressed about getting into UBC General Science because my father is pressuring me and I never seem to pull my marks high enough. One error or mistyped colon can easily take down a whole function. Usually they start off badly, but then have a huge upswing.

Definitely try to form a study group for this course, because at the speed the professors are going through the notes, you won’t know what they’re trying to focus on by yourself. The last time 76avg was okay was 2 years ago.

If you're just banging your head against your notes for 8 hours straight and not understanding stuff, then it's just not working. I disagree that cpsc is "most competitive". Hot New Top Rising. Usually there are around 4-5 paragraphs/questions for sciences. With that average, you're even guaranteed entrance scholarships. I know several other people who had a rough university transition but they're doing okay now :) Don't give up! I think the required average last year was something like 76% for BSC cpsc. Also, let me know who your profs are. not sure, but for any combined major it's the higher of the two that you'll need.
All of that said, keep in mind also that not all backgrounds are created equal.

Expect to hit the books frequently to practice and refine your skills before the exams come around. Things got a bit better in 2nd year and I'm getting used to things now.

In either case, you'll need to take better advantage of all of the available resources to help you pass. From what I can tell, least competitive may be math (even for Honours, it seems open admission as long as you meet a threshold).

I was not prepared for the shit-storm of challenge that was early UBC science. Might also be your learning style. I think that's because people who get into UBC generally invest some of their identity into their ability to perform well academically, just as anyone invests some of their identity into any marketable/sought-after skill that they excel at. As a matter of fact, I am Asian! Obviously the "minimum" grades for each specialization are posted by UBC, but I haven't been able to find any information about the average gpa of people who were admitted in previous years or anything like that.
You’ll find that scientific writing requires brief, but comprehensive wording, so saying what you mean is essential to succeed in this class, as opposed to high school, where sentences need to be more flowery.

I really liked BIOL 201 and did pretty well, but then overestimated my ability to study during the summer after a two-month trip and got another 68 in BIOC 302. That will do wonders for your average. UBC will only look at your top 4 Grade 12 provinciable courses and be sure to do your supplementary application.

Most are really understanding and will try to help you as best they can, whether it's 1-on-1 help during office hours, or things like that. The chem learning center is helpful if you need help on the labs (121 or 123).

You can expect to spend 10 hours a week easily on this course with web assignments and lab preps. COGS(pysc path) mid 70s. I ended up with 1 F (my 8am class that I never went to because I could never wake up, lol) and a bunch of Bs and Cs at the end of first year after a lot of studying.
I, like you, have always been competitive about my academics and I kind of invest too much in my ability to perform well (as someone else mentioned). I'd guess that you'd be safe over 75, neither of those majors are too competitive. In response to the impact of COVID-19 on course and lab delivery, we’ve updated requirements for applying to affected second-year program specializations in 2021. I was not prepared for the shit-storm of challenge that was early UBC science. A supplemental is a place where you can write down your strengths and list whatever ECs you have. It used to be something like 72 or so. Basically, UBC uses a broad based admission, so if you are on the lower end of the mark spectrum, you are strongly suggested to write a supp. You need to be efficient with your studying. Both your head and your hands will be aching after each in-class write of an unknown topic, where you scramble to gather your thoughts and explain your thinking in a scientific viewpoint. Not only is it only worth 2 credits, but the weekly 3 hour labs with the grueling lab experiments to practice manipulating variables will make you feel like you’re being eaten alive.
