At first glance, the Taurus 856 is an unassuming little gun. The 856 is offered in either a Matte Black or Matte Stainless finish. Revolvers and semi-automatics each fill my safe, and for different reasons. Any gun that I carry for self defense is going to be tested against a fairly strict accuracy standard.
Much better quality then. It works and the trigger, while a bit rough, was lighter than most recent J-frames I’ve had my hands on. And home defense with appropriate ammo, of course. I haven’t owned any Taurus products since, due to many reports of failures post-2000. This handgun is well worth its modest price. I have the Taurus Model 44 revolver with 6-inch barrel and I love it. This system does allow Taurus to do something really cool, however. Despite not having carried it, I have no doubt that this revolver would carry well.
I would have asked for one of those had I realized they were available. The size difference between the 856 and competitors isn’t all that significant, and it’s just another factor in your balancing. . And yet the longer barrel is not a liability at all since it is for home defense and even a revolver with a 6-inch barrel is plenty maneuverable in tight confines. It’s a little known fact that what people call ‘fingernail polish’ actually started out as SEF, with multiple colors to accommodate those whose eyes pick up different colors in dim light. Concealed carry, home defense and outdoors are its use case and given its very reasonable price, it’s an excellent all-around option. At this point I think the ideal home-defense revolver would have a seven or eight-round cylinder, five-inch barrel, and tritium night sight like this Taurus revolver. Makes me think of the SKS or Makarov or even Tokarev back in the ’90s…. pressure Custom in the gun and it does well, in terms of accuracy. Another thing to consider is this is a budget gun, and a lot of people can only afford one gun, or only want one gun, and I was part of this camp for a long time. The Taurus 856 might be affordably priced, but it’s machined to good standards. My cousin pulled out a revolver out of storage after about eight years and attempted to dry fire it. My first Dot Torture session with this gun was not encouraging. Most of this knowledge is centered around the use of a roundgun, but but a considerable portion is about guns themselves. As an old [email protected]%^, to teach somebody (including females) to use a handgun, a revolver is simplier. I found this holster acceptable for conducting the Dot Torture drill but did not feel comfortable carrying it in the street. Good points, especially on bobbing the hammer. Three inches would be my lower limit, but I prefer 4-5″ barrels for their superior accuracy. This is the version I consistently see on gun shop shelves selling for under (sometimes well under) $300. I wouldn’t recommend any of this–except for coloring both front and rear sights– for pretty much any other brand of firearm, but heck, it is a Taurus. He likes it a lot. I discovered the trick of dabbing both sides of the rear sight when I started shooting a little high in dim light, because I couldn’t pick up the rear sight. For those unaware, the new management at Taurus has restored a Limited Lifetime Warranty for new Taurus products like this 856. I’d prefer a stainless version of the 856. “It will withstand exposure to the elements in an ankle holster, at least up to a point.” I will probably carry it at some point, but not necessarily around town. This gun’s finish seems less rugged than my Parkerized 1911 or Cerakote. In my experience they seem to have excellent triggers. The 2-inch barrel on the 856 now comes with a removable serrated front sight optimizing on-body or off-body carry, and home defense usage. I am not personally aware of any semi-major Taurus issues, but one does read some pretty strongly worded opinions online. The grip didn’t dig into my waist like several others do, and it was well-positioned for a fast, smooth draw.
. From the first cylinder, all the way until the very last, I never experienced a single stuck case. The Taurus 856 Defender is one of those handguns that is light, powerful and accurate enough to go along hiking or camping. I took longer to review this gun than I did the King Cobra (I received both on the same day) so it spent some time traveling around in my range bag. It’s a friendly and useful firearm.
